A study completed by the Health & Safety Executive of Great Britain published in December 2019 reported that the total number of cases of work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2020/21 was 822,000, a prevalence rate of 2,480 per 100,000 workers. This rate is not statistically different compared to 2019/20, but is higher than the 2018/19 pre-coronavirus levels.
In 2020/21 stress, depression or anxiety accounted for 50% of all work-related ill health cases. Of the 822,000 workers suffering from work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2020/21 an estimated 449,000 reported that this was caused or made worse by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. These number of workers who suffered work-related stress, depression or anxiety as a result of the coronavirus pandemic should not be subtracted from the overall estimate of work-related stress, depression or anxiety as it cannot be assumed that those individuals would not have otherwise suffered from work-related stress, depression or anxiety in the absence of COVID-19.
